UH softball sets home run record

The 25th-ranked University of Hawai'i softball team hit nine home runs yesterday to set the school's single-season record with 89 in a Western Athletic Conference doubleheader sweep of Utah State at Logan, Utah.

The Rainbow Wahine (30-11, 8-0 WAC) tied the school record of 84 homers, set in 2007, with four in a 12-4 victory in the first game. Freshman shortstop Jessica Iwata hit a grand slam in the sixth inning for the record-tying homer.

Hawai'i added five homers in an 18-8 victory in the second game.

Freshman center fielder Kelly Majam, who leads the nation in home runs, hit her 21st of the season in the first game to tie Kate Robinson's school single-season mark set in 2008.

Junior designated hitter Jenna Rodriguez belted three home runs, Iwata batted 6 for 9 with two homers and seven RBIs, and Majam went 5 for 8 with a homer and four RBIs in the doubleheader.

Melissa Gonzalez, Alexandra Aguirre and Makani Duhaylonsod-Kaleimamahu also homered for the Rainbow Wahine.

FUJIKAWA FIRES 74

Honolulu's Tadd Fujikawa shot a 2-over 74 yesterday in the The Championship at St. James Plantation, an eGolf Tour event at Southport, N.C.

Fujikawa, who had three birdies, three bogeys and a double bogey, is tied for 55th place.

Jeremy Pope leads at 6-under 66 with Tim Cantwell next at 5-under 67.

Former University of Hawai'i golfer Ryan Perez shot 10-over 82 and is tied for 173rd.
