Fire extinguished at Maui recycling facility

PUUNENE, Maui — Multiple fire engines and two water tankers were dispatched to a fire first reported at 2:35 p.m. yesterday at the SOS Metals Island Recycling facility at the Central Maui Baseyard on Mokulele Highway, the county announced.

Firefighters brought the fire under control around 3:50 p.m. The fire was approximately 50 feet to the nearest structure and no injuries were reported. Fire officials reported that the fire was confined to burning a large amount of scrap metal. No roads were closed and the cause of the fire is under investigation.
