The city Department of the Medical Examiner yesterday identified the man as John Victorino. The cause of death has been deferred pending further study, department officials said.

According to a written police synopsis, officers were sent to an apartment in Waianae about 10:15 p.m. Monday in response to a complaint that a man was armed and threatening people.

Police were told the man had recently used street drugs and was acting paranoid. Officers at the scene struggled briefly with the man, who was subdued and then became unresponsive, the synopsis said.

Police said Victorino was taken to a hospital, where he was pronounced dead. Victorino had a history of hypertension, but was not taking his medication and did not follow up with his physician, police were told.

Police said methamphetamine and marijuana were found in the apartment.
