Advanced journalism students at the University of Hawaii at Manoa have completed another edition of "Campus Connections," a news and public affairs program covering topics of interest to the community both on and off campus.

Marlo Sciarra, a student in Journalism 401 taught by UH Professor Gerald Kato and longtime TV newsman Randy Ennis, hosts this edition, which can be viewed online on the KITV.com Web site's "u local" home page. (KITV is the local television affiliate of the ABC network.) "Campus Connections" is also shown on 'Olelo community television.
In this edition, Riley Inouye reports on the rising cost of parking on the Manoa campus. Fees for the parking structure and visitor parking have gone up, and Inouye gets different perspectives on the increases. Mokihana Aki goes into the Manoa neighborhood to talk to a student who arrives early so he can grab an on-street parking space. A Manoa resident shares her thoughts with Aki about students parking in the neighborhood.
Davis Kane explains why it may be more difficult for students to find on-campus housing these days and how some students are being forced to pursue a more costly alternative. Aaron Oshita discusses an innovative academic opportunity called "C-MORE," the Center for Microbial Oceanography Research and Education, which encourages UH students to engage in hands-on research with more experienced scientists. Students may qualify for traineeships, apprenticeships, internships and fellowships.
Colleen Morrisey reports on the clean up of the Krauss pond. "It took three days and 16 volunteers to drain the pond, capture the fish, remove the plants, rake the sediments, pressure wash the floor and restore its natural beauty," Morrisey said in the segment. University officials discourage students and others from dumping their unwanted fish into the pond, which has no drainage or filtration system.
Other topics of interest presented on the show: the new UH President, M.R.C. Greenwood, first female to serve in that role in the UH system; the situation at Gartley Hall, which had to be evacuated after dangerous structural conditions were discovered in the 88-year-old building; and the university's response to the H1N1 and seasonal flu viruses.
"Campus Connections," is written, reported and produced by UH Manoa journalism students. Kimberly Ikemori and Shere'e Young provided production assistance with this edition. The show is produced in the university's Media Lab, directed by Don Kozono, and supported by the UH School of Communications.
