Kane'ohe Bay Marine killed

A 24-year-old Hawai'i-based Marine was killed Thursday in the Farah province in Afghanistan, the Department of Defense announced yesterday.

Lance Cpl. John J. Malone of Yonkers, N.Y., was a machine gunner assigned to 2nd Battalion, 3rd Marine Regiment, 3rd Marine Division, III Marine Expeditionary Force, based at Kane'ohe Bay. He was deployed to Afghanistan in May.

Details surrounding Malone's death were not released.

Malone joined the Marine Corps in February 2007. He previously deployed to Iraq in February 2008.

His awards include the Purple Heart Medal, National Defense Service Medal, Afghanistan Campaign Medal, Iraq Campaign Medal, Global War on Terrorism Service Medal and two Sea Service Deployment Ribbons.
