Waves shut out 'Bows in soccer

Sophia Medina and Michelle Spacciapolli scored goals in the first half as Pepperdine beat Hawai'i, 2-0, yesterday in a non-conference soccer match at Tari Frahm Rokus Soccer Stadium in Malibu, Calif.

The Waves (4-1-1) outshot the Rainbow Wahine (1-4-1) 22-4, including 11-1 in shots on goal.

Kristina Ehrett made nine saves for Hawai'i.

Medina scored on a rebounded deflection inside the 6-yard box in the 32nd minute.

The Rainbow Wahine had a chance to tie in the 43rd minute when Ambree Ako's corner kick went to Chelsey Goo, whose shot was stopped by Roxanne Baxter.

Spacciapolli made it 2-0 at the 44:38 mark when she gathered a shot off the crossbar and punched it back in.

Hawai'i continues its four-match road trip at Cal State Fullerton on Wednesday.

HAWAI'I PACIFIC, HILO BATTLE TO 0-0

Defense ruled the day as host Hawai'i Pacific and Hawai'i-Hilo played to a scoreless double overtime draw yesterday at Atherton Field.

The Sea Warriors (2-1-1) outshot the Vulcans (0-4-1) 19-9, including 7-3 on goal.

Carriane Makino made three saves for HPU while Shanna Brown had seven saves for Hilo as both goalkeepers played the entire 120 minutes.

HPU's best scoring opportunity occurred in the first half when Liana Gualdarama found herself open with the ball in the UHH penalty area. But Gualdarama's shot bounced off the crossbar and was cleared off the line.

BEACH VOLLEYBALL

COED EVENT TODAY AT QUEEN'S SURF

The sixth annual Restaurant and Bar/Hotels Coed Beach Volleyball event will be held today at Queen's Surf in Waikiki. Organizers are Hawai'i Volleyball Association, GAV and Hawai'i Food Bank.

The tournament is scheduled to run from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m.
