Perfection nearly came at a price

A perfect Pigskin Picks weekend almost resulted in two injured knees for Pearl City's Patrick Tranilla.

"I sprained my knee playing basketball last week and got so excited when I got called I almost sprained my left knee jumping up and down," said Tranilla, 60.

"I was surprised. I've been playing since the beginning (decades ago) and it was the first time I got a call."

But to see his results, you'd wonder why he hadn't won earlier.

Tranilla correctly picked the winners of all 15 games on the ballot — in both print and online. He mailed in only one ballot for the print, where there is no limit. Online players are only allowed one entry.

But his entries were just two of the 92 perfect ballots (45 print submissions and 47 online). His tiebreaker of guessing the total combined yards of Boise State and Hawai'i was just one yard off the 779-yard total. Tranilla also beat out two unlucky contestants who also had tiebreakers that were one yard off.

"The tiebreaker was kind of a guess from past weeks ... just pulled it out of my head," Tranilla said.

As far as strategy, he said, "Usually, I just go with the favorites and this week it worked out."

Tranilla, who played for Radford's legendary football coach John Velasco in the 1960s, wins a trip for two to Las Vegas and $100 worth of pizza from Papa John's.

"I'm going to Vegas next month — my fourth trip this year," he said.

Tranilla, who is retired, likes to play blackjack. "I played in a couple tournaments at the Orleans; made it to the semifinal round in the last tournament but didn't get to the money round, though."
