No. 17 Hawai 'i-Hilo sweeps Academy of Art

Fabiane Seben had 14 kills and six blocks as host Hawai 'i-Hilo beat Academy of Art, 25-17, 25-15, 25-21, yesterday in a Pacific West Conference volleyball match.

Josimara Pinheiro had 12 kills and seven digs for the No. 17 Vulcans (22-1, 12-1).

The Urban Knights are 16-11 and 4-7.

Elsewhere in the PacWest:

• Kelly Balanay had 17 kills and Kyra Pelayo 23 digs as Hawai 'i Pacific (12-10, 9-4) beat Dixie State (13-7, 7-4), 25-22, 25-20, 25-20.

HPU BATTLES TO TIE

Max Anton scored in the 67th minute as host Hawai 'i Pacific battled conference-leading Grand Canyon to a 1-1 tie in two overtimes of a Pacific West Conference men's match.

Matt Terry made nine saves for the Sea Warriors (9-2-2, 6-2-2). Kyle Ciliento scored in the 47th minute for the Antelopes (11-2-2, 8-0-1).

• Dyanne Anderson stole a pass and scored in the 105th minute as host Hawai 'i Pacific (8-6-1, 6-4) beat Grand Canyon (6-7-2, 3-4-2) in a men's match.

• Emily Mearns scored two goals as host Brigham Young-Hawai 'i (11-3, 8-2) beat Notre Dame de Namur (5-9-1, 5-4-1), 2-0, in a women's match.

• Arturo Gomez and Kellen Coffis scored goals as Notre Dame de Namur (8-8-1, 8-1-1) beat host Brigham Young-Hawai 'i (5-8-1, 4-5-1), 2-1, in a men's match. Sam Akinaka scored for BYUH.

• Jeremy Adams, Vincent Muscarella, Gabe Kallen-Brown and Gary Diego scored goals as host Hawai 'i-Hilo (7-8, 6-3) beat Dixie State, 4-0, in a men's match.

• Mikala Wilkes scored two goals as Dixie State (11-3, 10-0) beat host Hawai 'i-Hilo (3-8-4, 2-4-3), 3-1, in a women's match. Emily Lambert scored for Hilo.

• Pedro Guevara scored on a penalty kick in the 97th minute as Dominican (7-9-1, 4-6-1) beat host Chaminade (2-11, 1-9), 2-1, in overtime of a men's match. Jonathan Fukumoto scored for Chaminade.

• Eleanna Mendez and Mary Wheeler scored goals as Dominican (6-8-3, 4-5-2) beat host Chaminade (0-13, 0-10), 2-0, in a women's match. Marissa Minor made 11 saves for Chaminade.

SURFING

POWERS OUSTED

Roy Powers of Kauai was eliminated in the second round of the Rip Curl Pro Search men's surfing contest yesterday.

Thirteen of the 16 second-round heats were completed yesterday in 3- to 4-foot waves at Belgas, Portugal.

Jordy Smith of South Africa defeated Powers, 15.84-9.67.

Fred Patacchia Jr. of Oahu's North Shore has yet to surf in his second-round heat. He is the only Hawaii surfer remaining.
