Five-year-old Makani Cahill was among 54 students who showed up for classes this morning at Liholiho Elementary School in Kaimuki.

The school PTA organized an in-school child care arrangement for furlough Friday that included classes.
Everyone involved took the challenge in stride.
Im very happy about this alternative, said Makanis father, Ani Cahill, who said that his son likes school and was pleased to be in class.
I think a lot of kids these days are into school theyre happy to come to school.
For the three hired teachers involved, there was a sense of excitement in the air.
Basically, were hoping to take the skills the students have acquired in their more-structured classrooms and tried to help them use them in a more application-sort of way, said Jodi Yoshimura, the PTA-hired school director who normally is the school services coordinator.
Im very excited because Im an educator.
