Tennis: Wickmayer, Kvitova reach Generali Ladies final

Associated Press

LINZ, Austria — The top two seeded players of the Generali Ladies lost Saturday, leaving Yanina Wickmayer of Belgium and Petra Kvitova of the Czech Republic to play for the title.

No. 3 Wickmayer beat top-seeded Flavia Pennetta of Italy 7-6 (5), 6-3, and Kvitova upset second-seeded Agnieszka Radwanska of Poland 6-3, 6-2.

The 19-year-old Kvitova will play her second final of the season Sunday. She won her maiden ATP Tour title in Hobart, Australia, in January. Wickmayer, who turns 20 Tuesday, captured her first title in Estoril, Portugal, in May.

Wickmayer beat Kvitova en route to the U.S. Open semifinals and leads the Czech 2-1 in career meetings.

Wickmayer cruised to a 4-1 lead before Pennetta had two breaks and went up 5-4. However, the Belgian broke back and took the tiebreaker when Pennetta hit a forehand wide.

The second set went with serve until 3-3, when Pennetta double-faulted on break point.

Wickmayer added another break in the ninth game when she hit a forehand winner on her first match point.

The 10th-ranked Radwanska had reached the final in Beijing last week and the semifinal in Tokyo a week earlier.

Kvitova broke Radwanska's serve six times and closed the match with a forehand winner on her seventh match point.
