Advertiser Staff

Jamie Nakamura, 15, of Honolulu, has won the western region award as "Comeback Kid," honors given annually to young people suffering from various intestinal diseases who inspire others despite their health challenges.

Nakamura was honored for her perseverance, continuing to participate in several sports and martial arts, play the 'ukulele, learn to dance hip hop, despite a number of serious health conditions, including bowel dysfunction and a separate illness that resulted in blindness in one eye.
According to a press release from the Comeback Kids competition, Nakamura is considering a profession in eye care and off this advice to other teens handling medical challenges: "Learn to accept and live with your illness because it will always be a part of you. Trust that you family and friends will always be there to help you through the dark times."
