Commemorations for Memorial Day

 •  Punchbowl parking limited, so try a bus

Monday is Memorial Day, a time to reflect on those who have passed on and to honor those who have served in the military.

As part of the three-day holiday weekend, a host of events will be held across O'ahu. Here are some:

SUNDAY

  • 8:30 a.m., Daijingu Temple will hold a service in the Memorial Chapel at the National Memorial Cemetery of the Pacific at Punchbowl.

  • 10 a.m., the Pacific American Foundation will hold its annual service at the bottom of the Honolulu Memorial, at Punchbowl.

  • 10 a.m., 21st annual Waikiki War Memorial Natatorium Memorial Day Service. Keynote speaker: Brig. Gen. Gary Hara, Hawai'i Army National Guard chief of staff.

  • 1 p.m., Boy, Girl and Cub Scouts will gather at the base of the Honolulu Memorial at Punchbowl for their annual Good Turn Day Ceremony. The Scouts will then place small American flags and lei on the more than 38,000 grave sites.

  • 5:30 p.m., annual Vietnam Veterans Candlelight Ceremony, Punchbowl. Keynote speaker: retired Adm. Richard Macke, former commander of the U.S. Pacific Command.

    MONDAY

  • 8 a.m., the National Park Service and Pearl Harbor Survivors will host a flag-raising ceremony at the USS Arizona Memorial Visitor Center.

  • 8:30 a.m., Mayor's Memorial Day Ceremony, National Memorial Cemetery of the Pacific at Punchbowl. Keynote speaker: Mayor Mufi Hannemann.

  • 1 p.m., Governor's Memorial Day Ceremony, Hawai'i State Veterans Cemetery in Kane'ohe. Guest speaker: Tammy Duckworth, U.S. Department of Veteran Affairs assistant secretary of public and intergovernmental affairs.

  • U.S. Vets-Hawaii will reach out to homeless veterans at Ala Moana Park. A barbecue lunch will be provided and U.S. Vets staff will be on hand to meet with homeless veterans who could use the organization's services.

  • 6:30 p.m., 10th annual Lantern Floating Hawai'i ceremony, Magic Island end of Ala Moana Park. Prayer requests start at 1 p.m. Free parking will be available at the Hawai'i Convention Center and free shuttles from there begin at 4 p.m.
