Films hope to make impact in France

By Jeff Chung

"Angels and Demons" may be up against "Star Trek" in the American box office, but in France, film enthusiasts from around the world are gathered to see what's showing at the Festival De Cannes. Two Korean films have been selected this year: "Bak-jwi (Thirst)," directed by Park Chan-wook, is in the Cannes Competition and "Mother," directed by Bong Joon-ho, is in the Un Certain Regard section. The 62nd annual film festival ends this weekend and many filmmakers hope to take an award home or, even better, have their film purchased for international distribution.

"Bak-jwi" is in competition with nearly 20 other films from all over the world. Park Chan-wook is a veteran Cannes attendee and has directed past film hits, including "Old Boy," and has been at many other film festivals to show his films "JSA: Joint Security Area," "Sympathy for Mr. Vengeance," "Sympathy for Lady Vengeance" and "I'm a Cyborg, But That's OK."

Playing the main character in "Bak-jwi" is film veteran Song Kang-ho ("YMCA Baseball Team," "JSA," "The Foul King," "The Host," "Secret Sunshine" and "The Good, the Bad and the Weird"). The actor attended the Hawaii International Film Festival in 2002. In "Bak-jwi," Song Kang-ho plays Sang Hyun, an admired Catholic priest who volunteers for a medical experiment to develop a vaccine for a disease in Africa. The experiment fails but miraculously Sang Hyun is cured and returns home, where the townspeople start to believe Sang Hyun has a divine healing power. Sang Hyun meets an old friend and his wife — Kang Woo and his wife Tae Joo — then dies suddenly after coughing up blood and comes back to life the next day as a vampire. Sang Hyun and Tae Joo start a sinful love affair and plot to murder Kang Woo.

"Mother" is the other Korean film at the festival, hopes to be recognized. Acclaimed director Bong Joon-ho is known for his past work "The Host" (winner of the Audience Award at HIFF), "Memories of Murder" and "Tokyo!" (selected in the same category last year). Actress Kim Hye-ja plays the mother of Do-joon, played by Won Bin of "Autumn Story," "Taegukgi" and "Brother." The plot centers on a widow who lives with her only son, a helpless and quiet 28-year-old who gets framed for a murder. Do-joon's mother decides to take matters into her own hands to prove her son's innocence.

The Hawaii International Film Festival is hoping to get these films for this year's festival in October.
