‘mamma mia!’ arrives in isles

The jukebox musical sensation "Mamma Mia!" opened last night at the Blaisdell Concert Hall for a three-week engagement.

The production was originally scheduled for a two-week Honolulu run, but it was extended due to high ticket demand.

"We're so excited that we are being so warmly received," said Michelle Dawson, who plays the lead role of carefree single mother Donna for the Honolulu engagement. "When we heard the show had been extended, we were ecstatic — and so grateful to the people of Honolulu. Three weeks in Hawai'i is a dream come true."

Based on the songs of 1970s pop group ABBA, the stage musical is a mother-daughter tale of friendship and self-discovery — and the frantic search for daughter Sophie's biological father, who could be one of three men.

"Mamma Mia!" will run through May 30 with performances Tuesday through Thursday at 7:30 p.m., Friday at 8 p.m., Saturday at 2 and 8 p.m., and, through May 24, Sunday at 2 and 7 p.m.

Tickets are $40 to $75, and are available through the Hawaii Opera Theatre box office by calling 593-2468.
