Nevada ousts Rainbow Wahine

Nevada scored two runs in the top of the 10th inning to defeat Hawai'i, 4-2, in an elimination game of the Western Athletic Conference softball tournament yesterday at Fresno, Calif.

The Rainbow Wahine, who were 1-2 in the tournament, completed their season 30-24.

With one out in the top of the 10th, Britton Murdock walked and went to second when Sam Bias reached on an error by the shortstop. After Sarah Hunt fouled out to third, Jessica Haight doubled to right-center field, driving in Murdock and Bias. Michelle Beach grounded out to first for the third out.

The Rainbow Wahine hit three consecutive groundouts in the bottom of the 10th.

Nevada took a 1-0 lead in the second inning on Beach's bases-filled walk off UH pitcher Stephanie Ricketts.

UH tied it on an Amanda Tauali'i's RBI triple in the fifth and took a 2-1 lead on Melissa Gonzalez's RBI single in the sixth.

Nevada tied it at 2 on Noelle Micka's RBI single in the seventh.

Ricketts gave up nine hits, and one earned run and walked three and struck out one in 10 innings.

HPU WINS IN WEST

Hawai'i Pacific scored runs in the first and third innings and held on to defeat UC San Diego, 2-1, yesterday in an opening-round game of the NCAA Division II West Regional softball tournament at St. George, Utah.

The Sea Warriors (41-10) will play Dixie State, a 7-6 winner over CSU-Monterey Bay today.

HPU's Ciera Senas singled to lead off the bottom of the first and later scored on Krystal Plunkett's single to left field.

In the bottom of the third, Senas singled down the right field line to drive in Laine Shikuma to give the Sea Warriors a 2-0 lead.

UC San Diego closed it to 2-1 on an RBI single by Jenni Habib in the fifth inning.

Courtney Kessell (19-4) earned the win, allowing one run on four hits in 4 1/3 innings. Sherise Musquiz pitched 2 2/3 innings for the save, allowing no runs on three hits.

BOXING

PENOVAROFF FIGHTS

Van Oscar Penovaroff of Kona will face Kana Hyatt of Hilo for the X-1 bantamweight (135 pounds) championship in the main event of the X-1 World Events mixed martial arts card today at Kekuaokalani Gym in Kailua, Kona.

It is the X-1 organization's first event on the Big Island, and several fighters from there will be featured on the 14-bout card.

In other bouts of note, Dave Moreno will face Justin Mercado for the featherweight (145 pounds) state championship, and Alika Rincon will face Dominic Ah Nee in a battle of lightweight (155) contenders.

Tickets range from $35 to $100. Preliminaries are scheduled to start at 7 p.m.
