Father arrested in baby's death

Advertiser Staff

HILO, Hawai'i — A 34-year-old Hilo man was arrested in connection with the death of his 2-year-old daughter, who died of head injuries Wednesday at Kapi'olani Medical Center for Women and Children in Honolulu.

Hawai'i County police identified the child as Iyanla Kuamo'o-Andrews. An autopsy performed Thursday indicated she died of blunt force trauma to the head.

Police said Fire Department personnel were summoned to a home in the Wainaku area of Hilo about 8 p.m. Sunday in response to a report of a young child found unconscious by her parents, police said. Paramedics were able to revive the girl, who was transported to Hilo Medical Center and later flown to Honolulu for further treatment.

Police said investigators found cause to believe that at least one of the child's injuries was caused by her father, who was taken into custody at that time on suspicion of abuse of a family member. He was released Tuesday pending further investigation.

Because the toddler died on O'ahu, the Honolulu Police Department is assisting Big Island detectives in the investigation.

Police ask that anyone with information about the case call Lt. Mitchell Kanehailua at 808-961-2252.
