Louisiana Tech tops Rainbows, 8-5

Louisiana Tech scored three runs in the top of the ninth inning to beat Hawai'i, 8-5, to take its second game of the four-game Western Athletic Conference series tonight at Les Murakami Stadium.

Jamey Bradshaw (1-4) allowed a run in 4 2/3 innings of relief for the Bulldogs (24-18 overall, 9-9 WAC).

Sam Spangler (5-1) gave up three runs in three innings for the Rainbows (26-18, 9-8).

The Bulldogs broke a 5-all game with a three-run ninth. Matts Combs led off with a single to center and was replaced by pinch runner Clint Stubbs, who reached second on Patrick Thomas' sacrifice. Nick Grunenwald doubled to right to score Stubbs to put Tech ahead, 6-5. Kevin Winn's double to left increased the Bulldogs' lead to 7-5. Winn went to third on a wild pitch before Devon Degeford walked. Spangler was pulled for Harrison Kuroda. A wild pitch scored Winn and moved Degeford to second. Chris Kersten walked. Degeford stole third, as Kersten held first. Kersten stole second, as Degeford held third. Jonathan Mire grounded out to short with the infield drawn in, as the runners held their bases, Mark Threlkeld struck out to end the inning.

The Bulldogs wasted little time, taking the lead in the first inning. Patrick Thomas led off with a single to right, took second on Nick Grunenwald's sacrifice and scored on Kevin Winn's single to right-center to put LaTech up, 1-0.

Hawai'i took the lead in the fourth. Ryan Morford led off with a single to left, but Vinnie Catricala struck out. Kevin Macdonald was hit by a pitch to put runners at first and second. Kolten Wong doubled down the right-field line score Morford to tie the game at 1 and move Macdonald to third. Macdonald scored and Wong went to third when Landon Hernandez grounded out to short and UH went ahead, 2-1. Sean Montplaisir walked to put runners on the corners. Jeffrey Van Doornum was hit by a pitch to load the bases, but Matt Roquemore popped out to third to leave the bases loaded.

Louisiana Tech tied it in the fifth when Kyle Roliard singled with one out, took second on a wild pitch when Matt Combs struck out and scored on Thomas' double to right.

The Rainbows regained the lead in the fifth. Greg Garcia opened the fifth with a triple to center and scored on Ryan Morford's double to left-center. Catricala's single to left moved Morford to third. Morford scored on Macdonald's sacrifice fly to deep center to make it 4-2. Catricala stole second on the first pitch to Wong and Moseley was pulled for Jamey Bradshaw. After a 3-0 count, Wong was intentionally walked, but Hernandez grounded to short for a double play.

The Bulldogs fought back to take the lead in the sixth. Winn singled and went to third on Degeford's double to left-center. After Chris Kersten struck out, Alex Williams' two-run single to center tied the game at 4. Mark Threlkeld walked, prompting Sam Spangler from the bullpen for Sisto. Pinch hitter Clint Ewing struck out, but Matt Combs walked to load the bases. A wild pitch advanced the runners, putting the Bulldogs ahead, 5-4, before Thomas grounded out to first to end the inning.

Hawai'i tied it at 5 in the seventh, when Morford doubled to right with one out, went to third when Catricala grounded out to short. Morford scored on a wild pitch on ball four to Macdonald.
