Princess, pizza, pollen and puppets all play a part in Hawai'i Theatre Center's production of "Sleeping Beauty: The Musical."

The performances are geared at the elementary school set, but the public has an opportunity to see the new twist on the classic story tonight at 7 p.m. or tomorrow at 2 p.m.

One thing remains the same. Princess Aurora (Seleena Harkness) sleeps. In fact, she's doomed to sleep forever unless the Prince (Josh Dugger) can save her.

However, Aurora may be fast asleep, but she has more depth than her Disney counterpart and, rather than sleep through the action, much of her action takes place in her dreams. In her disco dreamworld, dragons eat pizza and fairies are allergic to flowers.

The show is directed and choreographed by Hester Kamin and the cast includes Jason Kanda (playing four roles, including King and Wicked Fairy), Stephanie Kong, Jeremiah Oehlerich, Erik Wessel, Adrianne Liongson and Anika Mitri.

It also has puppetry from master puppeteer Kat Pleviak, an original score and lyrics by Tanya Kirk, costumes from Hannah Schauer Galli and set design by Bart McGeehon.
