Bell, Yada capture Junior PGA crowns

Alika Bell of Kane'ohe, and Britney Yada of Hilo captured their respective age divisions at the 2009 Aloha Section Junior PGA Championship yesterday at the Waikoloa Beach and Golf Resort course.

Bell shot a 1-under 69 for a 137 total to capture the boys 16-18 division. Yada also shot a 69 for a 147 total to claim the girls 16-18 division.

Bell and Yada qualified for the 34th Junior PGA Championships, July 28 to 31 at the TPC River's Bend in Cincinnati.

Other age division winners:

Boys 13-15 (Par 70, Beach Course): Scott Yamashita 72-143, won by matching scorecards. 11-12 (Par 72, Kings' Course): Jino Sohn 74-153. 9-10 (Par 72, Kings' Course): Shon Katahara 71-142. 7-8 (Par 36, Kings' Course): Christian Yanagi 42-84.

Girls 13-15 (Par 70, Beach Course): Cassy Isagawa 74-148, won by matching scorecards. 11-12 (Par 72, Kings' Course): Yangcongrong Huang 82-163. 9-10 (Par 72, Kings' Course): Kristin Miyagi 89-196. 7-8 (Par 36, Kings' Course): Millburn Ho 54-104.

U.S. SENIOR OPEN QUALIFYING AT PRINCE

Nine amateurs and 20 professionals play for a spot in the U.S. Senior Open Monday in the local qualifier. Golfers tee off from 11:32 a.m. at Hawai'i Prince.

The field includes Hawai'i Golf Hall of Famers Larry Stubblefield and David Ishii, Casey Nakama, David Chin, Mark Morrison, Leland Lindsay, Rodney Acia, Stan Souza and Michael Kawate, who won the Amatour's 'Ewa Beach Championship last weekend.

The U.S. Senior Open is July 30 to Aug. 2 at Crooked Stick Golf Club in Carmel, Ind. All golfers 50 and older, with a handicap index of 3.4 or better, are eligible.

MAUI'S MOCHIZUKI ACQUIRED BY METS

Infielder Gered Mochizuki, a 2003 graduate of Baldwin High, had his contract purchased by the New York Mets from the independent Southern Illinois Miners, various Web sites reported.

He has been assigned to the rookie advanced Appalachian League's Kiingsport (Tenn.) Mets.

Mochizuki, who was drafted in the 49th round by the Kansas City Royals out of Baldwin in 2003, went to Central Missouri for college before beginning his pro career last season with independent Evansville of the Frontier League and later Orange County of the Golden Baseball League.

He was hitting .269 with 12 RBI in 25 games with the Miners when he was picked up by the Mets.
