Ipo Kalahiki held her team's flag high after snatching it from the water during a 2007 race. Today's races run from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. — preceded by an 8 a.m. opening ceremony. Spectators watch free.

If you're looking for Sunset on the Beach, head to Ala Moana Beach Park, not Waikiki, because this weekend the outdoor movies have been paired with the Hawaii Dragon Boat Festival.

The annual festival kicks off with an opening ceremony at 8 a.m. today, followed by races from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m., and more races tomorrow. The fees have been waived for those who are racing, and the event itself — a Chinese tradition to ward off evil spirits — is free to watch. Crafts, community booths and musical entertainment add to the festivities and will bridge the gap between the races and a screening of "Kung Fu Panda" tonight at 7:15 p.m.

For more information about the Dragon Boat Festival, call Alenka Remec at 768-4279 or visit the Hawaii Dragon Boat Festival Web site at www.idealhawaii.biz/dragonboatcm/default.asp?id=25.
