Father found guilty of attempted manslaughter

Advertiser Staff

A 34-year-old homeless man accused of attempting to murder his 7-month-old daughter was found guilty today of the lesser charge of attempted manslaughter.

A Circuit Court jury deliberated for about two days before finding Pulumata’ala Eli guilty. An attempted manslaughter conviction carries a maximum sentence of 20 years in prison, but prosecutors said they will seek an enhanced sentence of life with parole because Eli is deemed to be a danger to the community.
Eli originally was charged with one count of second-degree attempted murder, which carries a mandatory term of life in prison with the possibility of parole. He was accused of beating his daughter, Alice, in their van as it was parked at Ala Moana Beach Park on Oct. 24, 2007.
The girl was left severely disabled.
