NBA: Gonzaga’s Daye will stay in draft

By NICHOLAS K. GERANIOS
Associated Press Writer

SPOKANE, Wash. — Gonzaga forward Austin Daye decided Monday to remain eligible for the NBA draft and leave school after two seasons.

The 6-foot-11 sophomore had given clear signs he was not planning to return to school.
“We’re excited for Austin. It’s what he wants to do,” coach Mark Few said in a news release. “He was great to coach and was a great teammate. He will be missed.”
Daye becomes the third Bulldogs player to enter the NBA draft early, joining Paul Rogers in 1997 and Adam Morrison in 2006. Both left their junior seasons.
Daye averaged 12.7 points and 5.8 rebounds per game as a sophomore. He averaged 10.5 points and 4.7 rebounds as a freshman.
The son of former UCLA and NBA player Darren Daye, Austin was heavily recruited out of Woodbridge High in Irvine, Calif.
Listed at only 200 pounds, Daye will need to add weight when he gets to the NBA.
Daye performed poorly on several athletic tests in the NBA’s pre-draft camp last month in Chicago. He has worked out for Toronto, Phoenix, Detroit, Minnesota, Charlotte, Golden State and New York.
Daye averaged 22.5 minutes for the Zags this season, making 47.7 percent from the field and 42 percent from 3-point range. He blocked 70 shots, the highest single season total in team history.
Daye’s departure is a big blow for Gonzaga, which finished 28-6 and advanced to the round of 16 appearance in the NCAA tournament. Daye would have been the second-leading returning scorer, after Matt Bouldin.
