Some of the highlights of Duke Bainum�s career in public service:
� Graduated from University of Maryland School of Medicine in 1980 and fulfilled internship requirements at the University of Hawaii�s surgical residency program from 1980 to 1982.
� Served as volunteer doctor in Nepal in 1984, where he says he came to realize that government could treat the root causes of the illnesses he saw in poor people.
� Returned to Hawaii and began his political career as a staffer to state Sen. Bertrand Kobayashi.
� Served as chair of the McCully-Moiliili Neighborhood Board from 1989 to 1990.
� Elected to state House in 1990 and served until 1994.
� Member of city council from 1995 to 2003.
� Defeated by Mufi Hannemann in Honolulu mayoral race in 2004.
� Returns to city council in 2008, replacing Ann Kobayashi, who vacated seat to run for mayor against Hannemann.
