Tennis: Rafael Nadal still hoping to be fit for Wimbledon

Associated Press

MADRID — Rafael Nadal says he will travel to London next Tuesday in hopes of defending his Wimbledon title despite pain in both knees.

The top-ranked Spaniard said Tuesday in a statement on his Web site that he will undergo physical therapy. Spanish Federation physician Dr. Angel Ruiz-Cotorro says Nadal has tendinitis in both knees. Nadal went through two days of medical tests in Barcelona.

Nadal says he won't play "if I am not 100 percent ready."

He says he has been playing with pain for months and "I simply can't go on like this. The pain was limiting certain movements in my body, which affected me mentally as well."

Nadal withdrew from a warmup event at Queen's Club this week.

Wimbledon starts June 22.
