San Diego State right-hander Stephen Strasburg is expected to be the top overall pick, by the Washington Nationals, in today’s first-year player draft.

Here are 10 others to watch in this year’s draft, which for the first time spans three days:

College
— Dustin Ackley, North Carolina: More or less the consensus No. 2 pick after Strasburg, Ackley, a first baseman, hit .400 for the Tar Heels and could project as a center fielder professionally.
— Grant Green, Southern California: Considered a top pick after a stellar Cape Cod League showing last summer, Green, a five-tool shortstop, had a subpar junior year (four home runs, 18 errors). But he rallied late to hit .374 and likely claw back into the top half of the first round.
— Mike Leake, Arizona State: The right-hander is 16-1 this season, leading the NCAA in victories, and is a two-time Pacific-10 Conference pitcher of the year. He is polished and experienced enough to quickly make an impact at the major league level.
— Tim Wheeler, Sacramento State: The center fielder does everything well. He’s big (6-4) with speed, and although he hit 18 home runs in 54 games, Wheeler is more of a contact hitter.

High school
— Tyler Matzek, Capistrano Valley (Mission Viejo, Calif.): The left-hander has been getting better all year. Matzek capped his high school career last week by hitting a home run in a 1-0 sectional championship game and pitching 18 scoreless innings in going 4-0 in the playoffs. He will likely be the first high school pitcher drafted today.
— Shelby Miller, Brownwood, Texas: The right-hander is another power pitcher from Texas in the mold of Josh Beckett and others. He’s 6-4 and throws in the mid-90s.
— Donovan Tate, Cartersville, Ga.: The son of former NFL running back Lars Tate, Donovan is an outfielder who is a standout in baseball and football and could be playing both for North Carolina in the fall if he doesn’t sign with a major league team. Draft experts have called him the best athlete in this year’s pool, though the combination of football and UNC may discourage some teams from selecting him.
— Patrick Shuster, Mitchell (New Port Richey, Fla.): The left-hander gained notice for setting a state record with four consecutive no-hitters. That certainly boosted his stock, but perhaps not enough for him to forgo a scholarship offer from Florida.
Others
— Aaron Crow and Tanner Scheppers: Both right-handers were drafted last year but didn’t sign. Crow was the 11th overall pick by the Nationals and has been pitching in an independent league in Texas. The Missouri product could be selected in the first 10 picks. Scheppers’ shoulder problems last year caused him to fall to the second round, where he was picked by the Pittsburgh Pirates. Formerly of Fresno State, he been pitching for the independent St. Paul Saints.
