Classic surfboards, products fetch $767,000 at auction

Advertiser Staff

An auction of classic surf boards and memorabilia brought in more than $767,000 from 379 bidders from around the world.

The amount raised and the number of bidders Sunday set records for the Hawaiian Islands Vintage Surf Auction at the Blaisdell Center exhibition hall.

The most expensive item was an 11-foot Bob Simmons foam sandwich board built around 1950 that sold for $40,000 to an Australian bidder.

The same bidder also walked away with the second-highest-priced item, a 1955 Matt Kivlin 10-foot-4-inch balsa board for $39,000.

The highest-priced non-surfboard item was a family album of the legendary surfer Duke Kahanamoku. It sold for $14,000 to a Hawai'i bidder.
