BOE holds off on library closures for now

Advertiser Staff

The state Board of Education tonight voted to hold on library closures, at least for now, and asked state Librarian Richard Burns to come up with other options to achieve budgt cuts.
The board also voted to take three of the five libraries that had been targeted for closure off the list. Those libraries are the Hana, Ewa Beach and Pahala libraries.

The state Public Library System had proposed the closures to help reduce $5.7 million from its budget this year. In addition, the system plans to freeze all vacant positions and cut personnel expenses.
