Woman dies after car plunges off Laie Point

A woman died in waters of Laie Point this afternoon after a car she was in plunged into the ocean, officials said.

Firefighters, Ocean Safety officers, Emergency Medical Services personnel and police responded to Laie Point after a white car went off the cliff top, fell about 25 feet, landed upside down in the ocean and sank in about 15 feet into the water at about 4 p.m.
First responders from Kahuku fire station scaled down the cliff and removed an adult woman from the driver’s compartment, said HFD Capt. Terry Seelig.
“They had her out within 15 minutes of their arrival,” said Seelig. “She was unresponsive when they pulled her out.”
Firefighters were assisted by Ocean Safety officers who showed up on jet-powered water craft with a sled, on which they carried the woman from the choppy waters to an easier access point on the beach about a half mile away.
Emergency Services spokesman Bryan Cheplic said EMS “paramedics treated and transported the woman in critical condition to a nearby hospital, and subsequently she was pronounced dead shortly thereafter.”
Police officers at the scene took charge of investigation.
