Joey Logano won the Nationwide Series Dollar General 300 Powered By Coca-Cola race at Chicagoland Speedway for his third win of the season and continues to live up to his billing as one of NASCAR's rising stars.

Logano passed Kyle Busch with 25 laps left last night, then held him off on old tires over the final 10 laps at Joliet, Ill. The 19-year-old Logano, the youngest winner in Sprint Cup history, did not make a late pit stop to get fresh tires.

The gamble paid off for the Joe Gibbs Racing driver.

Busch, his JGR teammate, knew he couldn't catch Logano.

"I can't believe it dude, he's driving away from me," Busch said over his radio.

Logano also won Nationwide races at Kentucky Speedway and Nashville, Tenn.

Busch was second. Brian Vickers, Jason Leffler and Kevin Harvick rounded out the top five.

"Joey had a better car than us tonight," Busch said.

Busch kept his overall points lead over pole winner Carl Edwards. It was the fourth 1-2 Logano-Busch combination finish this year.

"They've just got their stuff together," Vickers said.

MICKELSON TO SKIP OPEN

Phil Mickelson will skip the British Open so he can be with his wife as she starts her recovery from breast cancer, ending the longest active streak of majors played at 61.

Mickelson said last month at the U.S. Open, where he was runner-up for a record fifth time, it was "highly unlikely" he would play at Turnberry next week.

His wife, Amy, had surgery July 1 for breast cancer and they are still waiting to decide the best treatment. While his wife was ready to have surgery, Mickelson learned his mother also had been diagnosed with breast cancer.

"As a professional golfer, competing in major championships and winning them is my main objective," Mickelson said on his Web site. "But I've always said family is my No. 1 priority. For that reason, I won't be playing the British Open at Turnberry next week."

He will be replaced in the field by Ben Crane.

GAY CLOCKS 9.77 IN 100

Tyson Gay gave notice to world record-holder Usain Bolt by running the fastest 100 meters of the year in 9.77 seconds at the Golden Gala yesterday in Rome.

Gay swept pass previous record-holder Asafa Powell 40 meters from the finish. Powell finished second in 9.88, and fellow Jamaican Yohan Blake was third with 9.96.

"I feel that I improved on the previous races," Gay said. "Today the race was better executed and my shape is improving."

Gay, who's preparing to defend his 100 and 200 titles at the world championships in Berlin, expected to be a favorite at the Beijing Olympics before a hamstring strain at the trials ended that hope. Bolt won both gold medals in world record times.

In the women's 100, Jamaican Kerron Stewart was still in contention for a share in the $1 million jackpot after three legs of the six-leg Golden League, winning in 10.75 seconds.

Sanya Richards won her third Golden League meet in the 400, adding to victories in Berlin and Oslo. The American won in 49.46 seconds.

CANADA IN CUP QUARTERS

Omar Cummings' goal midway through the second half lifted previously winless Jamaica to a 1-0 victory over El Salvador in the final CONCACAF Gold Cup Group A match last night in Miami.

The Jamaica victory clinched the group's second-place spot for Costa Rica, which tied group winner Canada 2-2 earlier yesterday. Canada and Costa Rica advanced to the quarterfinals, which begin July 18.

El Salvador and Jamaica each finished with 1-2 records and three points in group play.
