Brigham Young-Hawai'i junior forward Lucas Alves, who guided the Seasiders to a pair of victories, earned Pacific West Conference men's basketball Player of the Week honors.

The honor was announced yesterday for games played from Jan. 12 to 18.

Alves averaged 23.0 points and 7.5 rebounds per game in victories over Chaminade (105-97) and Notre Dame de Namur (104-67).

Meanwhile, Brigham Young-Hawai'i senior forward Latoya Wily, a former Kahuku High star who led the Seasiders to a 2-0 week, earned Pacific West Conference women's basketball Player of the Week honors.

Wily averaged 28.0 points and 19.0 rebounds as BYUH beat Chaminade and Notre Dame de Namur.

She hit 22 of 37 field-goal attempts (59.5 percent) and pulled down 9.50 offensive rebounds per game. She leads the league in both scoring and rebounding for the week.

WOMEN

NO. 1 CONNECTICUT 88, NO. 2 N. CAROLINA 58

Renee Montgomery scored 21 points to help No. 1 Connecticut rout host No. 2 North Carolina 88-58 last night, dominating a matchup of unbeaten teams from start to finish.

Maya Moore had 19 points and 12 rebounds for Connecticut (18-0), which turned one of the most anticipated games of the season into just another lopsided victory. Connecticut built a double-digit lead in the first half and led 46-30 at the break, then increased the margin against a deeper and supposedly more athletic opponent.

Connecticut didn't need a huge day from Moore, who was coming off a 40-point day against Syracuse on Saturday. Instead, the Huskies constantly beat the Tar Heels' trapping defense for easy baskets and dominated the glass against a team obsessed with rebounding.

Italee Lucas scored 15 points to lead North Carolina (17-1).

NO. 4 DUKE 61, N. CAROLINA ST. 58, OT

Chante Black had 17 points and 17 rebounds, Karima Christmas also scored 17 points and No. 4 Duke rallied for a 61-58 overtime victory over host North Carolina State.

Black scored all of her points and grabbed all but one of her rebounds after halftime for the Blue Devils (16-1, 4-0 Atlantic Coast Conference), who came back from a 14-point deficit in the first half to win their 14th consecutive game.

N.C. State (8-10, 0-3 ACC), which trailed by five early in overtime, had a chance to send the game to a second extra period. However, Brittany Strachan's 3-pointer bounced off the front of the rim at the final buzzer.

HAWAI'I PACIFIC 89, CHAMINADE 53

Paris Gravely scored 26 points and Tiffany Wilson added 21 as the Sea Warriors (4-0 PacWest, 7-8 overall) rolled over the Silverswords (0-6, 0-14) at McCabe Gym.

MEN

NO. 4 PITTSBURGH 78, NO. 8 SYRACUSE 60

Sam Young pulled out of a three-game slump by scoring 19 of his 22 points in the second half and No. 4 Pittsburgh came back from its first loss of the season, surging shortly after halftime to defeat visiting No. 8 Syracuse 78-60 last night.

DeJuan Blair, also coming off a poor game during a 69-63 loss at No. 9 Louisville on Saturday night that ended Pitt's two-week stay at No. 1, was strong inside with 20 points and 12 rebounds.

Young, Pitt's leading scorer with an 18.7 average, made seven of 12 shots after going only 15 of 49 in his previous three games.

CHAMINADE 67, HAWAI'I PACIFIC 63

Noah Gottlieb scored 17 points, Mohamed Tangara 16 and Joel Smith 13 as the Silverswords topped the Sea Warriors in a men's Pacific West Conference game at McCabe gym.

Tangara added 14 rebounds for Chaminade (7-7, 4-2). Jason Curtis led HPU (7-6, 1-3) with 18 points.
