Speedskating: Shani Davis wins 1,000-meter speedskating event

MOSCOW — Shani Davis of the United States won the 1,000 meters today at the world sprint speedskating championship on Saturday.

Davis won the 1,000 in 1:08.86, with Dutchmen Simon Kuipers in second Stefan Groothuis in third.

Defending champion Lee Kyou-hyuk of South Korea and Wang Beixing of China led at the halfway point at the Krylatskoye Ice Stadium.

Lee, who is aiming for a third consecutive overall sprint title, won the 500 in 34.96 seconds, edging Keiichiro Nagashima of Japan by 0.05 seconds. Yu Fengtong of China was third.

Lee, who finished fifth in the 1,000, leads the overall standings after two of four races with 69.695 points. Davis is fourth with 70.050.

In the women's competition, defending overall champion Jenny Wolf of Germany won the 500 in 38.00. Wang was second, with South Korea's Lee Sang-hwa in third.

Margot Boer of the Netherlands dominated the 1,000 in 1:16.29. Wang leads the standings with 76.365 points.

The 500 and 1,000 will be repeated Sunday to determine the overall champions.
