Support SBS at LPGA Open on Oahu

By Jeff Chung

If you are a fan of KBFD, then you are also a big fan of the dramas that air on the station.

Seoul Broadcasting Network in Korea provides the popular dramas and other programming you see on KBFD. SBS and the top executives from the network are back in Hawai'i next week for the LPGA SBS Open at Turtle Bay Resort. This is their fifth year sponsoring the first LPGA event of the year in Hawai'i. You can show your support of SBS by attending the tournament next week from Feb. 9 to 14.

SBS is the only major private network in Korea. The others are partly or fully owned by the South Korean government. SBS operates a terrestrial station, two radio stations, three cable channels and three satellite TV channels in Korea.

The SBS Open starts on Monday with a pro-qualifying tournament, then a practice round on Tuesday and a pro am on Wednesday. The professional tournament starts Thursday and ends Saturday. SBS broadcasts the tournament in Korea when the country's temperature is near freezing. The broadcast in high-definition should help promote Hawai'i as a travel destination to South Koreans, given the visa waiver program implemented in November that lets South Koreans enter the United States without a visa.

Michelle Wie will make her LPGA Pro debut at the SBS Open. Wie played in the 2005 SBS Open as a 15-year-old amateur and tied for second place with Christie Kerr at 6 under par. Hall-of-famer Seri Pak and marquee players Paula Creamer, Morgan Pressel and Natalie Gulbis are to play this year.
