The state Department of Land and Natural resources will hold a meeting tomorrow night to hear public comments on a plan for protective fencing in the remote Alaka'i Swamp.

The Kaua'i Watershed Alliance wants to exclude wild pigs and goats from 2,000 acres of native forest, bogs, streams and wildlife habitat with a 4 1/2-mile fence.

The fence would allow access by hikers and hunters, according to a release from The Nature Conservancy of Hawai'i, an alliance participant.

The hearing on the Conservation District Use Application for the project will be from 6 to 7:30 p.m. at the Chiefess Kamakahelei Middle School in Lihu'e.

A copy of the draft environmental assessment for the fencing project, along with its cultural, biological and archaeological surveys, is available at the Web site of the Hawai'i Association of Watershed Partnerships at www.hawp.org.
