Wong picks up preseason honor

Hawai'i sophomore Kolten Wong was named to the Louisville Slugger's preseason All-America third team, according to Collegiate Baseball newspaper's Web site.

Wong, who played center field for the Rainbows as a freshman, was listed as a second baseman, the position he will be playing in 2010.

The Kamehameha-Hawai'i graduate was named Western Athletic Conference Freshman of the Year last season. He batted . 341 with 21 doubles, 11 home runs, 52 RBI, 46 runs and 11 steals.

He also was named freshman All-American by five publications. He spent the summer with the USA Baseball national team.

Collegiate Baseball also announced its preseason top 40. Defending WAC champion Fresno State was ranked 33rd. Hawai'i was listed as "others receiving votes."

Ranked teams on UH's schedule include No. 4 Cal State Fullerton (March 26 to 28 at Fullerton), No. 10 Oregon State (Feb. 19 to 22 at Les Murakami Stadium) and No. 26 Stanford (May 18 at Stanford). The Rainbows host Fresno State April 9 to 11 to open their conference season.
