UH-Hilo, Pinheiro picked preseason best in PacWest volleyball

Advertiser Staff

University of Hawai‘i-Hilo is the preseason pick to win the Pacific West Conference championship, and Vulcan senior hitter Josimara Pinheiro, from Brazil, is Player of the Year.

The order of finish and preseason all-conference team were determined by the nine coaches.
Hilo received three first-place votes and Brigham Young-Hawai‘i, last year’s champion, got four but had fewer points and was picked to finish second. Hawai‘i Pacific is fourth and Chaminade seventh, with one first-place vote.
Pinheiro, a two-time all-conference athlete, is joined on the preseason all-conference team by UHH senior Fabiane Seben, also from Brazil and another two-time all-conference selection.
Also on the team are Hawai‘i Pacific junior Kelly Balanay, from San Diego, and BYUH sophomore Losaline Faka‘osi, from Salt Lake City. Balanay is a two-time all-conference player and Faka‘osi was 2008 PacWest Freshman of the Year.
