Hunt for missing Japanese visitor goes on

Advertiser Staff

By 4 p.m. today, rescue crews had found no sign of a 29-year-old visitor from Japan who went missing after swimming off the Hilton Hawaiian Village yesterday.

The U.S. Coast Guard suspended a low-flying search that covered 59 nautical square miles, but Honolulu Fire Department rescue specialists continued to search the water and its Air-1 helicopter is still conducting an aerial search, said Capt. Earle Kealoha, HFD spokesman.
The search will continue until dark, unless the swimmer is found before then.
The man went for a swim at about 9 a.m. yesterday and was last seen by family members at 9:30, police said. When he failed to return shortly before 2 p.m., family members notified authorities and a search for him began.
HFD and city lifeguards searched the waters off the Hilton until dark.
The search resumed this morning.
