Hawai'i faced no tsunami threats from two separate earthquakes that struck yesterday — a 6.6 magnitude quake that hit the Santa Cruz Islands and a 6.9 magnitude quake that struck Japan.

The Santa Cruz Islands, which lie north of the archipelago of Vanuatu, were hit at 6:07 p.m. Hawai'i time last night. Honshu, Japan was struck at 12:56 a.m. Hawai'i time yesterday morning.

Hawai'i sometimes is threatened by tsunamis after earthquakes that originate from seismically active areas of the Pacific, such as Alaska's Aleutian Islands and the west coast of South America, according to the Pacific Tsunami Warning Center in 'Ewa Beach.
