Shark warnings taken down on Oahu's North Shore

Advertiser Staff

Lifeguards this afternoon removed shark warning signs along the North Shore of O'ahu and will return tomorrow to determine if the signs should be put up again.

The signs were posted earlier in the day after beachgoers reported that a shark more than eight feet long was seen eating a turtle at Papailoa Beach, which is also known as Police Beach.
The sighting occurred around 11:30 a.m. Lifeguards on personal watercraft did not see a shark but did find a turtle that appeared to have been bitten by a shark, said Bryan Cheplic, spokesman for the city’s Emergency Services Department.
Lifeguards cleared the waters at both Papailoa Beach and Laniakea Beach and will reassess whether to keep the signs posted at the end of the day.
