In remembrance of the attack on Pearl Harbor, film historian & tour guide Steven Fredrick will host a special two-part movie and tour program.
Fredrick, known for his collection of rare Hawaii-theme films, has assembled an unique blend of motion-picture images and historic Honolulu sights that reflects the local scene during the war years.
On Wednesday, December 3rd, a special screening of the film program "Hawaii During World War II: The Movies and The Music of the 1940s" is scheduled. It features original newsreel footage filmed during the attack on Pearl Harbor, a rarely-seen Looney Tunes cartoon starring Porky Pig, and musical short subjects featuring Lani McIntire and His Aloha Islanders.
"It's a mixed-plate of film comedy and historic tragedy," says Fredrick. "We will be looking at original film prints from 60 to 65 years ago. These films are not DVDs or video copies. We have the real McCoy here. Some of these films have not been seen in Hawaii since World War II."
Beginning on Thursday, December 4th, Fredrick will guide the first of three historic walking tours to the recreation sights and entertainment hangouts frequented by U. S. servicemen during their stay on Oahu.
"Ever since I saw the World War II newsreels, I have been curious about the Honolulu locations that I saw in these old films," says Fredrick. "I thought other people may be interested in seeing where the sailors and the soldiers partied and played during their off-duty time in Honolulu."
The Hawaii Wartime Tour is a four-hour walk through downtown Honolulu and Chinatown streets to the sites of former theaters, dance halls, diners, government buildings, pool halls, and taverns frequented by U. S. servicemen. Because of the length of the walking tour, comfortable sports shoes are strongly recommended.
Film Program: Wednesday, Dec. 3rd at the VIP Screening Room at 7:00 P.M. Cost: $10.00. Call for location.
Walking Tour: Thursday, Dec. 4th, Saturday, Dec. 6th, and Sunday, Dec. 7th. Tour starts on the Fort Street Mall at 1:00 P.M. Cost: $20.00.
