Tree giveaway on Saturday

In 1905 in the Territory of Hawai'i, Arbor Day was deemed to be the first Friday in November. To celebrate this year, Hawaiian Electric Co. is offering an Arbor Day tree giveaway at six sites Saturday across O'ahu. Last year, HECO volunteers distributed white hibiscus plants at the Kahe Power Plant. For a complete listing of sites and greenery to be given away, check www.arbordayhawaii.org; 543-4441.

Go for a greener Thanksgiving meal

Thanksgiving is heading our way. Plan now to make it greener:

  • Of course it's time to pull out the finest china, which is not only recyclable but makes guests feel special. If it's too big a crowd, enlist the help of friends to outfit the table.
  • Use local products. A trip to the farmers market saves money, too.
  • Make a plan for leftovers as well as for the main meal, so nothing goes to waste.
  • Save the planet

"I actually do think that the green revolution is the solution to the financial crisis, the national security crisis, the debt crisis and the climate crisis."
