Honolulu Mayor Mufi Hannemann spent more than $1 million between Jan. 1 and Sept. 20 as part of his campaign to return to Honolulu Hale for four more years, according to Hawai'i Campaign Spending Commission records.

During that same period Hannemann raised $838,751.58 and spent $1,069.084.30.

He has a little more than $1.5 million remaining in his coffers.

His opponent in the Nov. 4 general election, City Council member Ann H. Kobayashi, raised $202,920.74 from Jan. 1 to Sept. 20. She spent $353,148.14 during the same period.

Koabayashi's campaign is $152,227.40 in the red.

She did raise more money than Hannemann during the two weeks immediately following the primary.

From Sept. 6 to Sept. 20, Kobayashi raised $83,015.50 while Hannemann raised $28,412.09.

A.J. Halagao, Hannemann's campaign co-chair, did not reply to messages seeking comment. Honolulu City Councilmember Donovan M. Dela Cruz, Kobayashi's campaign manager, did not return messages seeking comment.

In February, Hannemann had raised more than $1.9 million from a variety of individuals and businesses for his re-election bid.

Records show Hannemann has raised almost $2 million during the 2006-2008 election cycle, and almost $4 million over the past eight years.

By comparison, at the end of 2001, former Mayor Jeremy Harris had raised just more than $1 million toward a possible run.

During the last mayoral contest, Hannemann spent roughly $2 million, while his opponent Duke Bainum spent $4 million.
