Driver in Aiea crash likely died of medical problem

Advertiser Staff

A man who was pronounced dead at Kapiolani Medical Center at Pali Momi following a traffic crash this morning on Kamehameha Highway in 'Aiea apparently passed out prior to the crash, said Bryan Cheplic, spokesman for the city Emergency Services Department.

He said the victim was taken to Pali Momi in critical condition following the 5:40 a.m. crash in the east-bound lanes of the highway fronting the Territorial Savings building.

Police Lt. Darren Izumo, of the Vehicular Homicide investigation unit, said the incident will be classified as an "attended death" and won't be counted as a traffic death.

Izumo said damage to the man's car from the crash was minimal.
