LAUSANNE, Switzerland — No suspicious betting patterns were detected during the Beijing Olympics, the IOC said Friday.

The International Olympic Committee had, for the first time, established a special unit to look for irregular betting activities at the games.

The IOC worked with a group called Early Warning System to monitor patterns and information from 450 bookmakers and online gambling sites across the world.

"The conclusions show that no irregular betting on Olympic competitions were registered during the games," IOC spokeswoman Emmanuelle Moreau said.

The initiative followed a series of betting and match-fixing scandals and investigations in various professional sports, including soccer, cricket and tennis.

The IOC had been briefed by former London police chief Paul Condon, who has conducted investigations into gambling and corruption in cricket. Condon said he did not believe the Olympics were particularly at risk, but that vigilance was required.

The IOC will meet with EWS and betting companies to decide on the procedures for future Olympics. An analysis of betting trends and activities in winter sports will be carried out in advance of the 2010 Winter Games in Vancouver.
