Aiea woman, 76, dies from car-crash injuries

Advertiser Staff

A 72-year-old 'Aiea woman died last night at The Queen's Medical Center about three hours after being injured in a single-car crash in Halawa.

The Honolulu Medical Examiner's office today identified the woman as Hideko Masaki. Autopsy findings listed cause of death as blunt force injuries of the chest and abdomen due to a motor vehicle collision and manner as accidental.

Police vehicular homicide supervising Sgt. Andrew Berky said the crash occurred at about 6 p.m. at Ulune and Puala'a streets. The woman was taken in serious condition to the hospital, where she was downgraded to critical and died at 9 p.m.

Masaki was driving a 2008 Toyota sedan on Ulune Street and attempted to make a right turn onto Puala'a, police said. A driving error may have caused her car to accelerate into a rock wall.

The death is O'ahu's 36th traffic fatality of the year.
