KAHUKU — The Kahuku girls volleyball team kept its perfect season alive, clinched the O'ahu Interscholastic Association's Red East regular-season title, and did it without one of its top players.

To top it off, Kahuku's victory over Moanalua last night was one to remember on the Red Raiders' Senior Night.

Nile Te'o had 16 kills and Ho'onani Apo added 11 — all in the final three sets — as host Kahuku beat Moanalua, 25-23, 20-25, 25-23, 19-25, 16-14.

"To come through against Moanalua, it's a big relief," said Kahuku coach Uila Fotu-Vendiola.

In the final set, Kahuku took a quick 4-0 lead, only to see Moanalua go up 7-6.

The Red Raiders got to match point at 14-12, but Na Menehune got kills from Kaylee Ponce and Carsen Mata to send it to extra play.

The Red Raiders ended things with kills from Amanda Tonga and Elizabeth Blake.

"It was exciting," Te'o said. "I really wanted it. It was my last home game ... Senior Night. We are well-conditioned to stay in five sets."

Kahuku, tied for No. 3 in The Advertiser's Top 10 poll, improved to 10-0, and wrapped up the division title with two matches to go. The Red Raiders will be the East No. 1 seed in the OIA Red playoffs, which start Oct. 16.

"Our goal is to win the OIA (tournament)," Fotu-Vendiola said. "This was a stepping stone to propel us toward reaching that goal."

Moanalua, ranked No. 7, fell to 7-3.

Kahuku played without Alyssa Wily, who suffered a season-ending knee injury at a recent practice.

"Alyssa is an outstanding player for us," Fotu-Vendiola said. "We got the bad news yesterday. She's out for the season."

With that being said, the Red Raiders still have plenty of weapons.

"We have talent on this team so that we can put people in and still get the job done," Fotu-Vendiola said.

In the first set, Moanalua led 22-21, but Kahuku scored the next three points with Jovan Falemalu serving to reach set point. Falemalu had a kill and Candace Tufaga added two during the spurt.

Moanalua's Courtney Calicdan had a kill to cut the deficit to 24-23, but a Na Menehune hitting error gave the Red Raiders the set.

Na Menehune led 19-15 in the second set, but the Red Raiders scored four in a row to tie it with Apo serving.

Moanalua's set-ending 6-1 run included two kills from Ponce, Calicdan's solo block, and a back-row attack and two hitting errors by the Red Raiders.

Kahuku's Apo, who didn't have any kills, blocks or aces in the first two sets, had six kills and a block in the third set.

"When I came in, I really wanted it for the seniors," said Apo, a sophomore. "I gave it my all."

Kahuku led 11-5 in the set, but Moanalua tied it at 14. The set was tied for the final time at 16, but the Red Raiders scored the next three points and Na Menehune couldn't recover.

In the fourth set, Moanalua served tough and it led to a 14-4 run, which gave it a 21-13 advantage.

Ashley Asing, Mata and Kylee Oshiro each had aces and Lahela Kaili had three kills during the spurt. Latricia Taifane had three kills and a block late in the set for Na Menehune.

On Aug. 26, Kahuku beat host Moanalua in four sets.

Moanalua coach Tommy Lake was satisfied with his team's performance last night.

"We missed a lot of serves and we need to learn how to come through when it counts," he said. "I'm proud. They beat us pretty solidly from the last time we played them."

Ponce had 19 kills for Na Menehune.
