NFL: Lions QB Orlovsky may need surgery on right thumb

Associated Press

ALLEN PARK, Mich. — Detroit Lions starting quarterback Dan Orlovsky says he may need thumb surgery for two fractures and a torn ligament.

Orlovsky hopes to return later in the season, and coach Rod Marinelli won't say which of Detroit's remaining quarterbacks will start against Jacksonville on Sunday.

Daunte Culpepper signed a two-year deal with the winless Lions on Tuesday and then practiced the next day for the first time this year. The 31-year-old Culpepper was a three-time Pro Bowl quarterback in Minnesota before a knee injury stunted his career in 2005.

Drew Stanton is in his second season in the NFL and hasn't played this year.
