HALEAKALA
National park honors conservation volunteers

Twenty individuals and organizations were recently honored by Haleakala National Park for donating thousands of volunteer hours to conservation work.

Among those honored by Park Superintendent Marilyn Parris were the Maui Rotary Club, Seabury Hall and Kamehameha School, for repairing cabins, pulling invasive plants and protecting endangered species.

The Pacific Whale Foundation and the Friends of Haleakala were recognized for their free monthly wilderness service trips that are open to the public.

Parris also acknowledged park employees Ron Nagata, Ted Rodrigues and Terry Lind for their close ties to the East Maui communities that regularly serve the park each year.

Volunteers contributed more than 48,000 hours of service to Haleakala over the past three years, park officials said.

Parris said the park plans to increase the number of residents, visitors and students who volunteer through two new partnerships with Pacific Whale Foundation and Pono Pacific Inc.
