Advertiser Staff

Stephanie Kono, a Punahou School senior, shot a 4-over 76 yesterday and is tied for 15th in the girls' division after the first round of the Thunderbird International Junior golf tournament at Scottsdale, Ariz.

Former Honolulu resident Chan Kim shot a 3-under-par 69 yesterday and is tied for fourth, two strokes behind boys' leader Gregor Main in the tournament conducted by the American Junior Golf Association.

Main, of Danville, Calif., leads William Kropp of Edmond, Okla., and Josh Jones of The Colony, Texas, by one stroke at the Grayhawk Golf Club's Raptor Course.

Kim, a former Hawai'i state amateur and high school champion, moved to Chandler, Ariz., after his junior year last year, to pursue more golfing opportunities.

Marika Lendl of Bradenton, Fla., shot a 71 and leads the girls' division by one stroke over Tiffany Lua of Rowland Heights, Calif., and Stacy Kim of Columbus Ga.

The field includes 48 boys and 30 girls, ages 12-18, from 17 states and 11 foreign countries.

The tournament ends tomorrow.

SOCCER

DYDASCO, COSTA TAKE GATORADE HONORS

Kamehameha senior midfielder Zane Dydasco and Kalani junior forward Tani Costa were named the boys and girls Gatorade Soccer Players of the Year, respectively, for the state of Hawai'i.

The award, given annually to one boy and girl in each of the 50 states and Washington D.C., qualifies Dydasco and Costa for the Gatorade National Player of the Year Award.

Dydasco was named The Advertiser State Player of the Year after leading the Warriors to the state title. He scored six goals with three assists this season.

Costa led the Falcons to a 13-4-1 record with 23 goals last season. She was named to The Advertiser's All-State Team the past two seasons. Dydasco heads to the Air Force Academy in the fall. Costa, who is a member of the U.S. Soccer Federation's U-17 national team, has already given a verbal commitment to Penn State.

Previous boys winners include Kekoa Osorio (Kamehameha, 2007), Matt Terry (Saint Louis, 2006) and Kirtus Adams ('Iolani, 2005). Other recent girls winners of the award are Mari Punzal (Kamehameha, 2007), Markee Nobriga (Kamehameha, 2006) and Kelsey Baker (Punahou, 2005).

VOLLEYBALL

WAIPAHU GRADUATE PALIELO TO COACH WSU

Andrew Palileo, a 1986 Waipahu High School graduate, was named head women's volleyball coach at Washington State last month. Palileo spent the past seven years coaching South Dakota State, where he went 154-86. He was conference coach of the year last season and helped the Jacks to their first NCAA Division I Tournament.

Palileo guided South Dakota State to an NCAA DII runner-up finish in 2001, when he was named regional coach of the year. He also coached at Bethel University in Minnesota, where he earned his master's in educational leadership.

Palileo recruited Kalani graduate Melia Iwamoto to South Dakota last year and she became the Jacks' starting setter, earning a place on the Summit Conference all-freshman team. She ranks ninth on the Jacks' career assists list.
