Hawaii recall for some May's-brand beef products

Advertiser Staff

Palama Meat Co., the state's largest meat processor, today issued a recall of specific May's-brand products as a precaution after E.coli 0157:STX2 was detected in self testing of remaining unused raw material purchased from the outside vendor.

The company reported its findings to the U.S. Department of Agriculture. None of the products being recalled have tested positive for E.coli and no illnesses have been reported, the company said.

The precautionary recall affects 4,500 cases of specific ground beef-related products and not all products are processed by the company. About 40 percent of the affected products have already been recovered.

The recall applies to the following products processed at the company's Kapolei plant between April 9 and April 21:

  • Six- and 10-pound boxes containing one-quarter pound and one-third pound "May's Teriyaki Beef Patties." Product codes: 157400, 157600, 157700.

  • Twenty-four pound bulk boxes of "May's Beef Picnic Patties." Product code: 158700.

  • Ten-pound boxes of "May's Beef Pattie, 3:1 Layer Pack." Product code: 158325.

  • Three-pound trays of "May's Ground Beef Family Pack." Product code: 410751.

  • Five- and 10-pound chubs of May's brand coarse and fine ground beef products. Product codes: 141115, 141120, 143915, 141420, 144150, 144155, 144200, 144205, 144209, 145410, 145420, 151115, 151415, 151430, 153220.

Consumers who possess any of the products can return them to where they were purchased for refunds.

The recall is the first in the 55-year history of Palama Meat Co., which has processed more than 80 million pounds of products over the past 10 years.
