Volunteers to conduct whale count around Hawaii

Advertiser Staff

Volunteers with the Hawaiian Islands Humpback Whale National Marine Sanctuary will conduct whale counts at 65 locations statewide today.

Participants will tally humpback whale sightings and document the animals' surface behavior during the survey.

The sanctuary, which is managed by National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration, protects humpback whales and their habitat in Hawaiian waters where they migrate each winter to mate, calve and nurse their young.

The survey will be conducted at various shore locations on O'ahu, Kaua'i and the Big Island.
